DISCLAIMER:
HYPER AUSTRALIA NOR I ARE TO BLAME IF ANYTHING GOES WRONG
YOU UNDERTAKE THIS TASK AT YOUR OWN RISK
I HAVE TRIED TO BE AS ACCURATE AS POSSIBLE, BUT IF YOU FEEL THERE IS SOMETHING INCORRECT OR WRONG, LET ME KNOW IMMEDIATLEY
I DID THIS ON MY X3 EXCEL SOHC, I CANNOT ASSURE IT WILL WORK EXACTLY ON THE DOHC AS SOME WIRES MAY BE DIFFERENT FOR THE TACHO WIRE
I CANNOT ASSURE ANYTHING FOR THE LC AND LC2 ACCENTS ALTHOUGH IT MAY BE SIMILAR
BE BLOODY CAREFUL WHEN SOLDERING ESPECIALLY WHEN USING A PENCIL TORCH (which i was, stupidly, doing) PLASTIC SHEATHING AND FOAM GOES UP REALLY QUICKLY
CHECK THE INTEGRITY OF ALL WIRES IN THE VICINITY AFTER SOLDERING AND MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO SMALL FIRES THAT YOU CANT SEE (i had a small one - bloody foam)

hi guys
i plan to make this a bit of a project file as i just recently scored a splitfire tacho gauge of ebay for $30 (second hand)
i plan to hook it up this week
and i will try to take pics as i go

with lots of reading and examining and help from this diagram:
http://www.geocities.com/hyundaixl2000/gxdash.htm
i think i have found a simple(r) way of hooking up a tacho

from the diagram above the standard dash has pins for Ignition, Earth, Illumination and Battery - the only one it doesn't have is the tacho wire
so some after some thinking, im like "why not run the wires for the tacho straight into the ole dash"?
so the plan is to tap into the following pins
20 - IGN (+)
22 - Earth
29 - Illumination
1 - Battery
the tacho wire is pin 6 top row from the righ of the ecu - the top row is 19 pins, the other two are 18 - in my SOHC excel it was an ALL WHITE WIRE, i am unsure about the DOHC and the LC and LC2 accent

the only tricky thing then is actually getting to the tacho wire from the ecu, and pulling the dash off!
UPDATE: after examining my wiring requirements for my tacho, i didnt need the battery wire, but maybe other tachos do
another thing, i think the globe is busted, so im not entirely sure pin 29 for illumination works or not - i will be modifying it from a globe to a LED and will report soon - see last post

Well, after some minutes, i have successfully pulled and reassembled my dash
took me all of 30 minutes to do, and now i know exactly how to do it when i get my gauge!!!

as soon as i get my gauge i will start 'experimenting'[/b]

there you have it
how to take your dash out
later (when i get the gauge) i will tap into those wires, and also run a wire down to the ecu for the tacho signal
i will get pics of that 2

to put the dash back in, work from last to first, making sure that the speedo sensor goes in correctly (there are corrective lugs that help the dash go in right, so its not hard to go wrong)

this is how i will run the wires to the back of the dash:

okay
make sure when you run the wires that they go behind the metal support bar that the dash unit screws into - otherwise it gets tricky
so run the wires behind that
connect the dash unit back up, check all operations (lights, indicators, PB light comes on etc) and if its good, reassemble the dash
once thats reassembled, check again to make sure you havent dislodged any wires, then finish tidying up and put all the shrouds, covers etc back on and you should be done!!!

im not sure about pin 29 working for the illumination, because there is something wrong with my light
i have jury rigged a blue led (with resistor) from the back of the gauge from acc and ground
so it is on as soon as my car starts, even during the day, but you cant see that....:D

If it were me i probably would have drilled a hole in hte dash and grometted it rather than pass it throught the vent (so its closer to the side of the car)...

But apart from that looks good...

Cheers

i couldnt be bothered
this was easier, and no fiddling to get a drill in there either, as i could pop the vent out and drill it in the shed

this should be very helpful as I have just bought a tacho off ebay Image and am gonna try a similar setup to robinscoupe by fiberglassing it into the dash but on the right side mainly because I have a small crack starting to come up from the front vents so hopefully ill be able to fix it and mould this tacho into the corner. As the saying goes, two birds with one stone...

yeah - im not such a big fan of 'monster' tachos
this one is nicely sized at 2 5/8" and it goes to 8000rpm
dont forget the SOHC cutout is 6000 and the DOHC is 6500rpm
max power is approx 4900-5250rpm

wow, i´ve never had so much trouble to wire up a tacho, usually just have 5 wires, Red - Power, Blue - Negative of the ignition coil, Yellow - power for light, Black - earth, Black - Earth for light

so simple
