Hey all.....
Decided to write this because when i come to do D.I.Y things to my 1998 X3 i cant find any help, advice or guides......
My guide is clearly a guide, after all i am a student with a small budget and an intrest in cars

Here is how i did my CAI

Step 1
Image
Pop the bonnet!
Now you must remove the original air intake, the factory air box (both top and bottom) intake pipe and removing the battery really helps out.

Original air intake: remove the 2 bolts on top of the radiotor, rembering to replace them once ait intake is removed
Intake pipe: Once bolt on the clamp at the throttle body end and one bolt on a clamp on the airbox end.
Airbox: Then remove the 3 bolts at the bottom of the airbox
Battery: One bolt at the bottom front of the battery

Out it all comes

Image

Step 2
Now is the hard part. You can put the CAI straight up to your airbox stock. However, this defies the point you wont a nice big hole in you air box. So grab a marker and put the CAI and airbox together and mark the airbox as to were the CAI sits. Now with a hacksaw i cut around this line, leaving a little gap for overlap. Your airbox should look something like this.

Image

Step 4

Now I used some silcon to join the CAI to the filter box and thus block any gaps remaing. As such

Image

Step 5

Now after leaving the silcon to set for a few hours, simply do the reverse of step 1.

Place the airbox and CAi intake in, followed by the intake pipe and then the battery. At the front of the CAI you may like to bolt it down, as you can see the 2 little silver bolts on myne. REMBERING to replace the 2 bolts on top of the radiator, failing to do that could be tradjic. And it should look something like this

Image

At the time of doing this i also replaced the stock filter with a K&N panel filter.

Pro's:
After doing this mod i noticed that there was a
* Louder and deeper induction sound
* Less restriction at high revs (3500+)
* Smoother acceleration and more accurate response

Con's:
* Costs money :(
* Takes a little time

Nice write-up Furball, and good photos too. Let's hope we can get a good few DIY threads here, that is a great start.

The CAI looks similar to the HVE/PSC one.

Does anybody know if that would fit into my Getz? My engine bay looks abit like that. How much does all of that stuff cost? Is the new piece of stuff u put in front of the headlights is that suppose to catch air? Where does it get it from?

PSC design a number of CAI kits to suit specific Hyundai models, although i am not 100% sure if they have developed a kit for the getz yet.

The flow of air (i guess) would come from the gap between your headlight and bonnet. Now i know this may not sound like a light of air flow but if you check out the psc website they have an article online of a feature Hot 4s did on cold air intake kits for X3 hyundais and found the the PSC kit to develop the coldest air and the highest power output so if you wanna go cai do it the proper way with a psc kit - i know i will be.

Also once you see the size (and placement) of the inlet hole on the resinator, you will see how it flows more air...

Furball if your still around, have you noticed any increase in fuel economy since installing the CAI?

Im thinking of trying it out but im not sure because i think my battery is pretty huge and it won't fit in?

Also, was it hard hacking the air box? You seem to cut it pretty neat with a hacksaw mate.

Hey,
Yeah i am still around...With the CAI, filter and exhaust i noticed a small imrovement in economy. About 10 to 15km more per tank lat time i cmpared it. Got the A/F gauge in he ar and it runs rther lean....

Um, yeah...you have to cut a decent sized hole out of your airbox

I placed the CAI around the airbox and traced it....then cut about 5mm less the the trace mark....to makeit look cleaner and stop any leaks....

Hope that helps

On closer inspection, i see that the CAI gets the air from around the headlight area. I was thinking it gets the air mainly between the gap from the bonnet and headlight. But there is a rubber seal there and its tight and was wondering how can more air flow actually go in?

Unless you cut the rubber seal a certain length but this may attract more dirt and water to enter the CAI.

Hey did u have to drill the holes so u could bolt down the CAI? Also did it come with bolts/screws?

Would there be anything bad if you didn't bolt it down?

Yes i had to drill holes

No it doesnt come with any screws, bolts

or even the silicon to join the CAI to the airbox and stop any leaks

You could leave it free hanging.... but the problems may be

1) It will rattle due to engine idel or speed and

2) It will comprimise the seal between the airbox and CAI...which may lead to leaks

Bunnings has some bolts only a few dollars and it will take about 5 mins extra to do...worth getting nutz/bolts

bozza: there is a 12mm (from memory) bolt at the front and rear of the battery that hold the battery in place. You only need to undo 1 of these to take the battery out.

I tell you the very first thing a Hyundai modifier or fixer should buy, is a 250 mm 3/8 drive socket extension. Then buy a cheap set of metric tube sockets. You`ll either need that extension, or a lot of paitence to get that front battery hold down clamp bolt out. I did the paitence way once with my Accent, then whipped into supercheap for a superworks ( oooh! shiny! ) extension. EDIT: Bozza! remove negative terminal first, replace it last.

Ok i've had a look and i've worked out i can do it without removing the battery which is good. There is 3 bolts that are holding the bottom of the airbox down. I can't get at the rear bolt. Just wondering how other people got that bolt un-done. Should i buy a socket wrench? If i do how do i know one of the sockets will fit onto the screw i need to get out? Sorry for all the newbie questions :p

If you havent got an inexpensive 3/8 drive socket set, you owe it to yourself to get one. Something mid range, not $9.99 and not Kingchrome. On a car like you have, and what you wanna do now an in the future, something in the mid price range will do you fine. The superworks stuff at supercheap is fine by me, I am a complete tool addict, but seriously superworks is okay for the home handy person. My no name socket set in 3/8 has served me quite well for over 5 years now. However spend what you want, its up to you.

But i dont know if the socket will reach into the spot i need to undo the bolt. Should i take the same bolt from the other side into supercheap and see if i can get that type of socket?

I cheated with mine, and undid the much easier bolts for the head light, removed it and undid the front clamp :)

Bozza: It should be the same type of socket, you are likely to need an entension for it though.

with my car, if the socket set comes out, 9 out of 10 the extension does too. The tube sockets get a go too some times.

Trade Tools is my second home... If you go there one day Boz they will help you out no end. They have an extensive range from Snap-On down to Force, so you can see exactly what suits you.

I picked up a set of Kinchrome 1/2" drive sockets for $250, down from $398. Although these arent what you need Bozza, they have a great range as well with decent prices, especially if the box has a scratch or dint.

Wanna see my tool box! :D

Image

My girlfriend is jealous that I spend more on it than I do on her... however, from a young age I realised the importance and significant of good tools and set my prorities accordingly!

:P

Cheers
Craig

Yeah they sure do!

although they only appear to list their own brands on their website its worth a look-n-see

http://www.tradetools.com.au/
http://www.hareandforbes.com.au

Trade Tools and Hare & Forbes are my two favourite stores ever! If your into tools and machinery then you will spend hours at these sites.

 I once had a nice kit of tools, about $600 worth (not much really in the big scale of things, but still pretty sufice) Till some prick stole them.

The Superworks Gold spanners are great! And can't wait to get myself a decent set of Kingchrome sockets again.. Changed the pads on the car the other day - except it took a little while longer cause i was limited to a 17mm spanner  I miss having a ratchet :(
