From what I heard I think that the new ones have software issues and it is making the brakes fail. Serious stuff.

The issue with them is a software fault that affects the ABS computer, i think it causes the ABS to kick in to early or something and not hard enough.

Apparently if you experience "inconsistent braking" you are meant to notify them and then come in for the recall.

i did hear somewhere that it may have effected Lexus's too... but the news this morning actually said 8.1 million worldwide have been recalled...

Toyota's stock options dropped in price majorly, and it created a big ripple in the nikii(spelling)?

Maybe 8.1 million toyota cars but just under 850,000 Pri-i.
There was a recall of toyota's for defective accelerator pedals.
Then there was the Prius issue.

heard more on it this morning,

3 separate recalls in 3 months,

Sticky accelerator pedal was the first recall
Cars accelerating with out reason(or touching the accelerator pedal)

and than the prius problem with the brakes

8.1 million Toyotas, around 850,000 pri-i worldwide

Don't own a prius but do own a '04 3.0 V6 camry (wife's ride). Smooth as silk & feels brand new. Made to last & everything original except wipers, batt & tyres.

agreed. mum owns an 06 Camry Sportivo. (sports tuned suspension etc.) runs like a dream 8) i believe that i read somewhere that all these problems started arising when they outsourced production of the 3 popular toyotas (camry, corolla, prius) to China.....

explains alot :D

apparently the corolla had a recall on one of the window switches that will spontaniously catch fire!

....

yer im gonna stick with my Getz 8)

Yeah that's right, the Prius doesn't run a break booster of sorts but rely on a computer to track the brake pedal and add "resistance" as it travels so it gets harder like vacuum assisted systems. Basically if you stab the brake the software in the computer doesn't apply braking straight away - While I'm not sure if its true if you managed to get the pedal 1/2 when the ECU picks up that your breaking you get light braking at 1/2 and almost heavy braking at the floor - exaggerated some what but that's the jist..

I think all up we had 4 Gen3 Prius's come in for the recall.

I thought the prius still has standark brakes too, in case of failure? You can clearly see them through the rims!

not like you'd notice a prius at WOT anyway

my mate is in the process of making up a 'toyotas excepted' template to put on a stop sign... he was cutting it from metal though so i think he's having warpage problems so it may not eventuate.

either way, pretty funny how even toyota outsources to china now.
