hey guys,
its been awhile since i've posted on the site, but just 2 days ago i had some trouble with my 07 getz.

it all started after the heavy rain up here in central queensland.
just so u guys understand a little more i'll explain a few things that could have caused a problem.

during the rains, our drive way had collapsed so we couldnt drive over it, so we had to park on one side and walk across it for about 2 weeks, once the water stoped flowing we put a track down across the creek with a pipe and every thing for the water, drove across it alot, but after just alittle rain, i got the getz boged in the bottom and had to tow it out. that was about 1 week ago. since then we have fixed the main drive way and have been using it. but with all the loose dirt on the surface, on saturday, i had more passangers then usual and was spinning my wheels the whole way up.

after driving for about 1km to our buisness. i herd wat sounded like metal draging on the bitumen under the car, after pulling up, i found it was coming from the drivers side wheel. pulled off the wheel, and took the brake pads off and every thing else and im not sure, but i think it was just a rock in the brake somewhere...

that night about 12am i drove my car into the nearest Town to pick up a maqte after her car broke down... and on the way home, i realised that i had a light flashing on the dash.

i read the manual and found out it was the engine light. but the manual says that it indicates a electrical malfunction and i should take it to a dealer. the engine bay had some extreme heat coming from it. but all my coolant and oil levels are full.. or almost full.. so i couldnt see that being a problem. i've checked that nothing has been disconnected or any broken cables.. but can't see anything out of the ordanary.

it has happened once more yesterday just doing a short drive of about 2 km's... and flashed for about another 3km's and then stopped.. and on the way back home it never flashed again. i have no idea wat is wrong with the car, but i dont really want to drive it anywhere.

I can also tell u that when the light first starts to flash the car starts to sorta slug along alittle. like its not getting quite enough fuel..

I have no idea but if any one can help with a link for a 2007 getz electrical manual or shop manual i would be greatly appreshiating it. and any info at all is welcome.

thanks,
jamie

I've some the same with my car, went over a puddle which was smaller on one side of the road, but the other was almost up to the seats, so i went over it and saturated my whole car! Car stalled but was alright with abit of driving.

I may be no help, but maybe the air filter got abit wet. Did your engine bay get soaked at all?

hey Jesse,

the engine bay hasnt been wet, the most i had was mud/ water up to the bottom of the gear box.
i decided to check my spark plugs today and found they were alittle burnt, i replaced them, gearbox oil, engine oil, and oil filter..
but before i did i got in my car to move it forward.. and my engine decided it was going to make a hidious sound..
it literally sounded like something inside the engine.. so i turned it off.. did all oil changes, put new plugs in and tried it again.. and still sounds like Sh*t but louder..
My father and i took off the top cover on the engine.. to expose the cams, and nothing looked wrong there. but as dad said, it sounds like the bottom of the motor is about to drop off :S..

i think my engine is rooted!

possibly you have ingested some water into the intake and is looking the way of a hydra lock. (water in the motor)

but i'd first look at all the electrical stuff first.
open up all the sensors / connections (MAP, TPS, ignition coils) and make sure that they are dry.

hey medic,
thanks for the responce, i have checked over every thing and it all seems to be in working condition, with no corrosion or any sign of water.

I think, My only option here is to tow the car back to my place, put it in the shed and remove the whole engine.. if i can find an engine/gear box cheap enough, i might even end up doing a complete swap...

was yours the 1.4 or the 1.6?

cus if its the 1.4 then go for the 1.6,

dunno the legalities of it but i reakon a beta swap getz would be sexii

dude in germany did it, with exhaust mods and a K&N he gets to 100km in 7.1secs, ( which beats out the tibby  )

lol but meh.. each to their own.

has your engine been modified at all?? cus the clunking etc may be a warranty thing?

other than that i think it still could have been hydro-locked,

cus if the engine indgested water it would go through the combustion chamber:

Air compresses, water doesnt

water in the combustion chamber means heaps of stress on your pistons, rods. crankshaft etc,

in saying that the water would have gone through the exhaust and condensated so if you opened the engine you wouldnt see any signs of water except broken pistons (if your really unlucky)

also in saying that if the water condensated and went though the exhaust then it most likely would have screwed up one of the o2 sensors, (i believe my getz has 3, but its the 1.4 so im not sure if that makes a difference)

if the o2 sensors are heaps screwed and giving wild readings, then the car is probably going to go into limp mode, (eg. engine dumps/cuts fuel and pretty much allows the car to "limp" to wherever it needs to get fixed),

it explains it, but then again its a car.

one thing ive learned about cars is it could be a multitude of things, more of a process of elimination more than anything,

I hope it all goes well for you, there are a few Getz engines being sold on ebay, all you have to look up is the G4EE (1.4) or the G4ED (1.6), which ever takes your fancy .

I hope it helps,

Let us know how it goes ya?

ciao

welll... lastnight.. i got the engine out... pulled gearbox off... and inspected the clutch... all was okay. just alittle worn... took of the sump today... nothing wrong inthe bottom, so went and checked the top... nothing wrong... so then we moved on to the pistons and the cylinders them self... turned the ckank shaft manualy... and after about 10minutes of looking there... dad said well.. F&CKED If I know wat the problem is then? and i decided to turn the crank shaft.... down go the 1st and 4th piston... up come 2nd and 3rd.... and sitting on the 3rd piston head... was two small peices of metal... not sure where they came from.. but.. looks like the piston is screwed...

any one know how much 1 piston is gonna roughly cost??

god damn hydro-lock

the metal may be pieces of your piston rings,
or double check the valves in cylinder number 3 cus the metal pieces could be from them, if not turn the engine block upside down and see if it came from underneath.

as for the piston, i second getting one from the wreckers, but make sure its in good condition and make sure you get the one for your engine!

whilst the 1.5, 1.6 and 1.4 are all alpha engines, their bores are all different.

if you have the time and moolah it may be worth chucking in a set of high comp pistons

or low comp if you want to boost it.. 8)

just an idea,

good luck with it all,

oh btw, is it particularly hard to get the engine out of a getz?

as in does the front of the car come off cus i dont see how it would be able to be lifted out of the top, lol bugger all room

well... lets just say... the bay of the shed was empty untill.... i started taking stuff off the car, i was using the 03 manual for the DOHC 1.5/1.6 as a guide for removal as i couldnt find an 07 manual.. ohh i have the DOHC 1.4

after removing the windscreen wippers, motor and that whole shelve... and air intake, battery ect. i took off the whole front bumber front quarter panels, undid the front hubs to remove axels, radiator... pulled the condenser to one side and hung it from the car frame with wire, removed every peice of electrical cable from the engine unbolted the air conditioner pump, P?steering pump... gear selector cables...fuel lines, vacum lines, Bassically every thing..

but thefunny thing is the manual says to lift the motor straight out... i had to get my dad to stand on the gear box to lower it as i hoisted it up because the gear box got stuck on the frame... and then slowly take the engine forward and manuver it over top of the stupid bunch of cables that hyundai decided to run across the bottom of the bumper and not put a plug on...

hardest part was undoing the air conditioner pump... as i couldnt see wat i was ment to unbolt.. found wat i thought was the last bolt.. and it turned out to be a gas release bolt.. and i droped the spanner.. then it took me 2minutes to get the spanner back onto that bolt and do it up..

I will take some pictures of the piston to show u guys the damage and also some pictures to show how much came off the car...

I know aye...
I think... I Need....
A MEDIC! :P

its basically just little cuts... those two big chucks are natural grooves in the piston..
but i agree.. its screwed.. and i havent much money to fix it.. and i havent got a job yet... still trying to get one of them fancy things to make money.

i'm probbally just gonna see a wrecker and get a new piston and clutch plate. and then back in... untill i get money to replace that bloody gear box

Well.. Jesse,

Long story short.....

i've had trouble with my gear box since i bought the car, i asked hyundai to look at it at 1000km service. but they said, if it gives u trouble after the service ring us and we'll book it in... because i was doing alot of high way travel i didnt have much trouble except for reverse jumping out.. but when i moved into town i started using lower gears and i had troubles.. so i rang them.. and we settled that they would check it at my 15,000km service...

they test drove the car, and told me nothing wrong with reverse, and 2nd gear synchros are gone due to driver abuse... so... i kept on to them.. and on to them and they said the same thing. never once pulled it out. so i went over their heads to hyundai website and customer service.. and asked them for help.. all they did was get my records off my dealer and said. if i pay for it to come out and its not driver abuse they would pay for it under warranty..

trouble was... by time i herd anything back from them.. the car had been driving 25,000km and well.. i had no second gear left at all..

so at the moment, wen im driving i go from first gear straight to 3rd and almost cause alot of accidents... I dont like the dealers in my closest town.. as other people have had troubles with warranty from them as well.. and its not only hyundais but also the Nissan's they sell...

:) that is all covered in my old build thread... and trust me.. this is the short version...

Cheers,
Jamie

that looks heaps bad :?

lol have u found out where the metal came from yet?

maybe somewhere in the intake pelenium,

ah well,

if you have transport it may be an idea to just save a bit (or get angel funding) and buy a 1.6 with a gearbox and possably ecu.

as i said before they go pretty cheap sometimes, just have to wait for a bargain,

that way u will have a working engine, plus another engine for spares, (valves, camshafts etc are all the same, its just the bore and stroke thats different)

and you will have way more grunt

ATM, i have no money.... and no job... i'm on "youth allowance" through centerlink geting $284.60 a fortnight.. and that pays off my loan and phone bill... THANK GOD I HAVE FREE RENT AT HOME!

Mummy and daddy going to pay for it for me, but they can hardly afford it, so i'm just going to buy the piston, all the seals/gaskets and the clutch plate.. and well, once the cars running.. and i find a job.. maybe then i'll look at buying a 1.6L with a working gear box and do a swop...

but i agree, its a great idea... Originally the salesman told me it was a 1.6L "sports" edition that they had sitting in brisbane.. and it was black.

and the only thing he told me the second time i saw him was, it will cost more because its not black, its mettalic paint job.. not one mention of the engine size. lol. but wasnt till i realised 12months later.. that the manual said 1.4l and the rego was for a 1.4l.. and then it clicked:(

I would say that the piston is fine to use again.
that top surface is not a friction surface and those marks should have no impact on performance or operation.
HOWEVER
if the bore of the cylinder is damaged (and i would think that it is) then you will need to have it rebored and get an oversized piston and oversized rings to put back in.
If the side surfaces of the piston are dented or marked then it would be time for a new one for sure but again you will also need a remachine and oversized piston, your chances of getting an oversized piston are slim from a wreckers.

Find out where that metal came from first.

It looks like there is alot of damage around the valve clearance divit's on the piston so my guess would be some where near the valves.
Also those metal chunks will not be alloy, what ever the metal used for the piston (probably a steel alloy) it will be harder and tougher than aluminium alloy.

Ask around at some motor reconditioners as to how much it would be for a remachine and oversized pistons/rings.
that is what it will take to get your current car back up and running, provided there is no other damage else where.
It may be cheaper than a 1.6 it may not be.
If that bore is damaged it may just be cheaper and easier to get the 1.6 now.

hey scythe,

i have looked at the bore of the cylinder and there is no damage once so ever... it suprised me, but all 4 cylinders are as smooth as a babies bum :D

the only serious damage was to the piston its self and i think the intake valve.. I have left an enquiry with hyspares for a price of the parts if they have them and im also going to compare that to any quotes from car wreckers ect and try choicing my better bang for buck $$$...
I dont have any cash my self so i'm looking at borrowing some from family. there fore i need the cheapest efficent option..

hey guys, i've pulled apart the gear box.. and well, it looks like maybe my problems were caused by manufactoring.. looks like they might have given me a broken selector from day one.. cause theres no where near enough metal in the gearbox to make up for this peice thats broken off... plus if this peice had of broken off inside, it would of jamed up the gears.. heres a few pictures of the damage.

u can see in the circle its broken off..

crunch in reverse is common.
something about straight cut gears.

if getting into reverse is hard at first, stick it into 3rd, then shift into reverse. much eaiser !!

my reverse didnt only crunch, it actually went into gear but as soon as u release the clutch it would do 1 of 3 things
1) spit out into nutral
2) spit out and contstantly grind untill u put ur put back on the clutch and pull it back into reverse
3) go in with out one problem...

i've been quoted $600 cheapest for a gear box, plus $80 Frieght. and thats from queensland hyundai spare parts. no one else within about 100km's has a gear box..

is this the problem that hyundai refused to fix?

if so i would go to the automotive ombudsman and get them to get hyundai to replace the gearbox under warranty

Yepp... exact same problem... the one where they said my syncro's were dead... hmmm... sycnro's look fine to me.. just my gears a little chewed and selector is welll.. yeah... COMPLETELY USELESS!!

I was thinking the same thing.. but after i went over the dealers head and complained.. i think they might have flagged me on the system... ha!
my father was in town and decided to order a head gasket through hyundai. and they asked for my car details.. and he told him.. and the guys reaction was.... AHHHHH! Jamie Robert... (which is first and middle name...)

BUT! totally worth a thought...

Well its nice to find out what the issue is.
I wonder if the dealer would have done the repair under warranty.
I bet you they wouldn't have, they would have said something about you breaking it some how and then lied they found the chunk in the bottom of the gearbox.

I wonder how it broke any way.

Tip for those reading:
Always ask to see damaged parts that they replace, tell them you want to see them when you drop your car off to prevent the "oh we didn't realise that you wanted to see them, they have been thrown out and taken away" response.
